The McDowell Garment Drafting Machine, circa 1885. This is a set of brass seamstress drafting rules developed by Albert McDowell and patented in the 1870s and 1880s. I have a small collection of these 19th Century pattern drafting systems and this is my favorite. It looks more complicated to use than it really is. Once you take measurements per the instruction booklet, you set the ruler adjustment screws to those numbers and you have the outline of your pattern piece. This includes spacing for bodice darts. The sleeve drafting piece can be used to make the two part sleeves that were used in 1880s and 1890s bodices. I haven’t used this to make a garment yet, mainly because there is some corrosion on a few key pieces and I don’t want to further damage it. Can’t say that I’m upset about the corrosion, though, because its existence on these pieces is the reason it was cheap enough for me to buy.
